Sealing roof drains with PMMA resin

New project using PMMA200 resin – sealing roof drains on a flat roof.
The liquid form, flexibility, and excellent adhesion to various substrates prove effective in demanding waterproofing applications, ensuring long-lasting protection against leakage.

Roof drains are among the most leak-prone elements of a roof drainage system. Their durable and effective protection requires materials with high flexibility, adhesion, and weather resistance. One of the most modern and proven methods is the use of PMMA methacrylate resin (polymethyl methacrylate), which creates a continuous, seamless waterproofing coating.

The process begins with thorough substrate preparation around the drain. The surface must be clean, dry, and stable – removing all dirt, old insulation layers, loose concrete fragments, roofing felt, or rust. If necessary, grinding or milling is performed to increase the resin’s adhesion to the substrate.

Next, a PMMA primer layer is applied, which penetrates the substrate and ensures excellent bonding of subsequent layers. After it cures, the actual sealing begins. The first layer of PMMA resin is applied to the prepared surface around the drain, into which reinforcing fleece is embedded – typically made of fiberglass or polyester. The fleece acts as reinforcement, compensating for stress and increasing the mechanical resistance of the coating.

After embedding the fleece, a second layer of resin is applied, which thoroughly covers the entire surface, creating a uniform, flexible, and watertight membrane. PMMA 200 resin cures quickly – even at low temperatures – allowing for rapid completion of work and full protection of the drain against water, snow, UV radiation, and aggressive roof environment.

The work concludes with a waterproofing inspection and aesthetic finishing of the detail. The resulting coating is durable, resistant to aging, and maintains its properties for many years, even in extreme weather conditions.
